This interesting thing happened at #AAAS2014 after my first panel, After Bulosan. We were talking about having others read our poetry differently than we intended (that was the question). Joi Barrios mentioned that she writes poems specifically for others to read aloud elsewhere, and its in the writing of the poem that is meant to be recited. I added that when writing poems, its in the specificity of the line breaks, in every piece of punctuation, in word choice for meaning and sound. Its in the forms you choose, which cue the reader and inform his/her reading. Joi and I agreed this is different than spoken word. A number of scholars approached me postpanel to tell me that was such a profound thing to say. So interesting.
