This irritates me so much. People know so little about Islam but have plenty to say. Female genital mutilation is not apart of Islam, women not being able to drive cars is not Islam, women not being able to get an education is not Islam, and women not being able to voice their opinion is not Islam. I could go on and on. In the sight of God women and men are equal, however, we are different when it comes to anatomy, the way we think and behave emotionally. Unlike Christianity, in Islam Eve was not blamed for the downfall of humanity. They both disobeyed. The fault is shared. Honor killings is not apart of Islam. It is not even to permissible to kill an animal without right, let alone a human. The Quran mentions: Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, [even] after that, throughout the land, were transgressors. (Surat Al-Māidah 5:32) During pre-Islamic times it was common for the Arab men to bury their young daughters alive because they were ashamed of her. It was a disgrace to have a daughter. The Quran mentions this: And when the news of (the birth of) a female (child) is brought to any of them, his face becomes dark, and he is filled with inward grief! He hides himself from the people because of the evil of that whereof he has been informed. Shall he keep her with dishonor or bury her in the earth? Certainly, evil is their decision. (An-Nahl 16:58-59) And on the Day of Judgement Allah will ask: And when the female (infant) buried alive (as the pagan Arabs used to do) shall be questioned. For what sin she was killed? (At-Takwir 81:8-9) Before Islam came women were seen as property and a lot of them were slaves. But Islam raised the status of women. It gave them a voice, dignity and respect. Women had the right to vote over 1400 years ago, Islam did that. Women just got the right to vote in the US in 1920. Islam gave women the right to own property over 1400 years ago. They also have the right to inheritance, something they didnt have in pre-Islamic times. Women have the right to marry whom they choose. She cannot be forced to marry someone she does not want to marry. If that occurs then the marriage is not valid. Women also have the right to seek divorce. It is not okay to abuse/beat women in Islam. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) never beat any of his wives. He has said The best of you are those who are best to their wives. [Tirmidhi, Sahih] Women could/can work in Islam and they are not required to contribute to the household financially. The man is responsible for taking care of his wife and children (shelter, food, clothing, etc.). It is a responsibility of every Muslim, man or woman to seek knowledge in Islam. As a Muslim woman I feel more liberated than I have ever felt in my whole life. I am proud to be a Muslim, I feel like that is the best part of me. It is also no surprise that the majority of those who revert to Islam are women. They see all that it has to offer, just like I did. People must understand that just because people do horrible things and identify with a particular religion does not mean that their actions are backed by that religion. I also want to add that there is just as much violence in the Quran as there is in the Bible (read the Old Testament). Many people seem to forget about that. Islam is not the problem, people are.
