This is Alzheimer Awareness Month in Quebec, and Ive been asked to be one of the spokespeople. This year the focus is on women, since the majority of the people with dementia are women, and much of the caregiving falls to women as well. Ive been very, very lucky with Michael but it is still stressful and difficult at times, and I couldnt do it without help. Thats one of the main messages - to ask for help. To look for help. Here in Quebec, a good place to start is Alzheimer Quebec, which takes in 25 societies across the province. Certainly there could be more support, should be more, and thats one of the imperatives - to convince governments to fund homes and professional caregivers and respite and research. But please, please know - help is out there, and you are not alone.
