This is Australia. Progressive Australia, that is. This is one of the reasons why I travel outside of the US to European countries where I know people, in groups, or with white people (see Chris Rock, ha!). I got called the n-word last summer in Northern Ireland but I didnt freak out because I was with a group of Northern Irish friends who, thankfully, didnt hear it. When people ask me about traveling in the UK, Europe, or Australia just to go and explore these areas and I just stand there and smile. They have no idea what they are recommending. Ill probably never do a backpacking trip across Europe. Another aspect of white privilege: you are free to travel in the UK, Europe, or Australia without fear of being racially harassed. Youre only likely going to be harassed for being an American. It must be nice, and a privilege, to never have to think about your race when traveling in Europe or Australia.
