This is Berty the 8-month old staffy/lab cross. Hes with me for two weeks board & train for general puppy lunacy. No patience, no impulse control, cant be still for a moment, goes nuts for food, steals everything, chews everything (even aluminium foil - omg, why?!) and to learn the full range of obedience. Ive got the next two weeks to shape this boy into something presentable. First things first... He is a food meteorite. So Im feeding him a little at a time, slowing him down a bit, asking him to wait a few seconds before piling in, and teaching him the Out!. The Out! means no matter how tasty (and later on with toys and possessions) you need to drop it, back away and sit down. This teaches a few things. Patience for one. Also - the dog owns nothing, ever. The human shares food/toys and its never a possession belonging to the dog, otherwise resource-guarding can creep in. Its handy too in case he ever picks up something that might not be good for him (hey, the chances are pretty high with this guy!) Also its teaching him just some really basic manners around food. Hes pretty cute eh?
