This is David, a first-year PhD candidate in Physics and a member of the PSA, UCC, UPS, UEC, and the Science Union. He’s fascinated by science and engineering and enjoys sharing his interests in these subjects by teaching first year physics units at UWA. When he’s not doing science, David builds model aircraft, boats, rockets, and engines. For the past 10 years he’s also been an active surf life saver. David’s postgrad home is the Frequency and Quantum Metrology Group in the School of Physics. He managed to present his research topic with great flair in under three minutes, winning the $1000 Three Minute Thesis runner-up prize for his talk A Matter of Time: stabilising signals for precision space science. Here are five reasons why he’d recommend PhD students get involved in the Three Minute Thesis comp: 1. It is great practise for public speaking and conference presentations in general. 2. It forces you to communicate your research clearly and concisely, which is of immeasurable importance in any field of research. 3. It gives you and your research much greater exposure both within academic circles and to the general public. 4. Your friends and family will finally understand what it is you actually do! 5. It’s a huge amount of fun and a great experience.
