This is Dr. Patterson responding to Vernettas question: Can peripheral neuropathy ever be reversed....cured? Dear Vernetta, This is an excellent question, and the answer is complicated. Right now we unfortunately do not have a cure all nerve repair medication - although the research for these types of treatments has been fierce. Peripheral nerves, involved in peripheral neuropathy, can potentially heal themselves. However, their ability to do so depends on (1) how severe the damage is (the more severe the damage the more difficult it is for the nerves to heal), and (2) whether the toxin or condition causing the neuropathy is still present or not. If the neuropathy is due to diabetes, then if the blood sugar levels are brought consistently under good control (so that nerves are not exposed to high blood sugar levels) it can be possible for the damage to the nerves to stabilize (so the progression stops), and over time it is possible for the nerves to slowly heal (especially if the nerve damage is not severe - if the nerve damage is severe beyond a point the nerves cannot heal). Hopefully with time and more research we will have improved options for treating and reversing neuropathy! ~SP
