This is Elenas story. In the heart of the Amazon, we met a family living in dire conditions. Just on the edge of the river floating on a plank of wood was the place they called their home. Elena lived on the floating plank with her children, where she was providing shelter, food, and support for her family all on her own. Raising her children as a single mother, Elena struggled in doing everything she could to give her children a better life. In order to move her family into a home and give them the safety and security they needed, Elena accepted work in a mining camp as a cook to make enough money to feed her children. At the camp, though she initially accepted the position as a cook, she soon was forced into prostitution. Elenas oldest daughter, a mother herself, was left to take care of her own child along with her younger siblings while her mother was working at the mining camp. As her mother was away, she was working any job that came along in order to get her family off the street. Waiting for her mother to return, she became a mother figure to her own siblings as she cared for them each day. Elena eventually escaped the atrocity of the mining camp, and came home to poole her finances with her daughters. She now had enough money to move her family into a home in a safer environment. Today Elena and her children live together under one roof where all of their basic needs are met. Her daughter is even finishing school, and looking to find sustainable work to support her own children. Though Elenas story is not uncommon, there is no reason for it be the everyday reality of so many women. Elena overcame the obstacles that life gave her, and put her children first through it all. She gave her children what she never had and showed them what it means to persevere with strength through lifes challenges. Tomorrow is Mothers Day. Its women like Elena that we honor. She is a Hero.
