This is Flanders winning her last start in her life! Flanders is not a popular or known horse sadly.. But i will like to tell you about her and show you why i believe she is another Ruffian! Flanders was foaled on 1992. She was a chestnut filly and had a little white marking on her forehead. She was bred at Overbrook Farm and her owner was John Magnier. She was trained by hall of fame and great D. Wayne Lukas and her jockey was Pat Day! She was sired by Seeking The Gold who was a son of the great Mr. Prospector! Her dam was Starlet Storm sired by Storm Bird. Her first start was on August 10th, 1994 as a two year old in race 5 at Saratoga Race Course on the dirt going 5 furlongs for a Maiden Special Weight. She won the race with ease by 7 and a half lengths with long strides! Her second start was on August 29th, 1994 at Saratoga Race Course again for the 8th race and going for her first stakes race which was the grade 1 Spinaway Stakes going for 7 furlongs which was the first time it will be at 7 furlongs! Flanders won it and holed the speed record as a time of 1:23.00 till in 2009 a filly named Hot Dixie Chick took the record by a second shorter! Flanders next start was gonna be at Belmont Park on September 17th, 1994 for the grade 1 Matron Stakes on the dirt going a mile! Flanders won the race with a bit trouble but still cleared away! Sadly she was disqualified and placed last since she was tested positive for isoxuprine. But she did won and a lot of people will say this too when a horse wins they win! But after that she stayed at Belmont Park for October 8th, 1994 going into the grade 1 Frizette Stakes now going to be tested for distance by going 1 1/16. Flanders went right to the front with ease to win the Frizette Stakes by 21 lengths and still going! Her last start of her two year old and sadly her whole career was going to Churchill Downs in Kentucky for the grade 1 Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies on November 5th, 1994 going 1 1/16 again! Flanders broke well and ran a fast pace up at the front on the rail with laters future champion Serenas Song led the race! On the final turn Flanders was going all out behind but caught up and battled with Serenas Song to get in front and win it by a head! She came out of the race with a condylar fracture of the cannon bone and a fractured sesamoid. She underwent surgery and was retired in early 1995 with earnings of $805,000 and The Blood Horse readers picked the Breeders Cup victory as race of the year for 1994 as well for earning Americas best two year old filly eclipse award. Flanders first foal which was sired by triple crown winner Seattle Slew took the eclipse award for best three year old filly of the year in 2000 also being a champion stake winner! Flanders produced a total of 13 foals and 11 was all successful in racing. At age 16 Flanders was euthanized in mid-February because of complications following a paddock accident at John Magnier and partners Ashford Stud near Versailles, Ky.
