This is Krystyna Haq, Michael Azariadis, Jo Edmondston and Amelia Scaffidi… together they form a tightly-knit team in the Graduate Research School, working together to ensure you’re supported throughout your postgraduate studies. Krys, Michael and Jo are Graduate Education Officers at the GRS, and Amelia is an Early Career Research Coordinator and Career Development Adviser. Let’s find out a bit about each of them. Krys enjoys exploring the outdoors, and her parents came to Australia from Poland as refugees after World War 2. She’s recently become a fan of Sabour Bradley and his programs “Head First” and “Extreme Tourist Afghanistan”. Michael likes to drink Old Town 3-in-1 coffee and to read Paul Theroux novels, He dislikes technology, especially anything with a screen; instead, he sketches and takes B&W landscape photos. Jo is first and foremost a mum of two teenagers, but when she’s not working or parenting, Jo love to read anything and everything, play her clarinet (reasonably well) or her cello (badly), run, swim and play water polo. Amelia has a two-year-old girl and a four-year-old boy. She’s widely travelled: her favourite holidays include the Canary island of La Palma, and discovering the blue grottos and hidden beaches surrounding the Aolean islands. Its very likely that postgrad students will need a bit of guidance at some stage in their candidature. Here are five things this team does for Graduate Research students and early career researchers (ECRs) at UWA: 1. Provide orientations to incoming Graduate Research students and ECRs. 2. Provide advice and seminars to Graduate Research students on a wide range of relevant topics related to progress through candidature, academic writing, and the development of skills that are transferable to various career contexts. 3. Provide advice and seminars on post PhD career opportunities for ECRs and Graduate Research students, including career development workshops aimed at building a research track record. 4. Organise workshops, retreats and networking events for Graduate Research students and ECRs. 5. Coordinate a variety of research awards for Graduate Research students and ECRs.
