This is Leh. The name Leh is derived from the word sLeh, which means a marshy area. May be thats why it finally got settled to be the Capital of Ladakh (Basgo and Shey also served as Capitals once). Everyone who assumes Ladakh to be a cold desert, with no vegetation and all would agree that some of the areas near Leh in the Indus belt are actually very green. This greenery is now slowly falling into endangered category, without no one actually realizing about it in the hustle and busyness of the booming economy in the area. I have chosen this picture to show you all two things, the greenery and the source, if you look at the mountains in the far. This picture was taken sometime in July, which means the snowline that we can see is the actual snowline, and for people who have travelled here extensively will agree that this snowline is constantly receding, and at a very high speed. With hotels and guesthouses coming at the speed of a bakery baking biscuits, believe me the underground water is also almost finished. So, now we are at the mercy of these glaciers, maximum of which will be gone in 40-50 years to come. As of now we have not faced the stark reality of water scarcity, but the day is not so far. Why I am writing this here was actually prompted by a post by admin Mr. Divyesh Muni in the morning telling that this group is a family of 50,000 now. Thats a huge lot of people and if we discuss these things on such a huge level, it will have more impact than telling a politician about the issue. We can discuss ideas and solutions, lets not go into expert comments and all, may be we can discuss it on our level, as travellers, as mountain lovers.....
