This is Rudy. Read his story as told by his new Mom Abigail, then please make a donation so we can continue to help like we have committed to doing for Rudy. Abigail writes - All in one month my husband lost his job of 37 years, our beloved pet got a brain tumor and had to be put to sleep and we had to sell our home and move. I knew I wanted to rescue another animal but needed some time. When we decided to begin looking, I wasnt sure what I was looking for, I was even offered a pair of kittens but knew in my heart I hadnt found the right match that needed me. (Ive had both cats and dogs in the past.). My mom and I went to the shelter and saw a cute puppy or dog in every kennel until we came to Rudy. (Actually they had named him Scourgify if that gives you any clue as to his history.) He was young, only 3 years old but was shivering and trying to make himself invisible by cowering with his face to the wall. After taking him out of the kennel for a meet and greet, I could tell that underneath all the pain and fear was a very intelligent and loving dog. So we inquired as to his medical condition and adoptability status. Being new to the area we were unfamiliar with the Hillsborough Animal Services Shelter. Then we learned that they are a euthanizing facility and because of Rudys multiple health issues, he would be top of the list to be put to sleep because he was considered to be of low adoptable status. He had heart worms, was still in treatment course for hook worms, had an upper respiratory infection, and was recovering from neutering surgery. After bringing him home we also discovered he has skin sensitivities and possible allergies. Although not clear in the pictures Rudy also has multiple scars which has left small patches of hair missing in many places on his face, torso and legs. In the past, I wouldnt have blinked at the cost of the treatments and would have readily spent the money to salvage this precious but wounded animal. However, in my current financial situation it is a different story. Animal services told us about FOHCAS so we went home to discuss the situation with my husband and my father. The next morning I left a message for FOHCAS explaining our need for assistance to help Rudy but after thinking about it all night and all day, my father (a softie for abuse victims of any kind) came home from work and said, Just go get the dog, somehow we will figure everything else out. So we went straight away and picked him up. He seemed to remember and recognize us and willingly accompanied us home. The next day we took him to the vet that was recommended by the Shelter. Credit cards became Rudys life saver-literally. I was still uncertain how we were going to pay his medical bills, even at the discounted charity rates we received, but I was completely certain that Rudy (my husband came up with the name and its quite fitting!) was the dog I was meant to be with. The day after the vet visit I get a phone call from Jaackie at FOHCAS. They can help us with Rudys medical expenses! I have done a lot of charity work in my life, been president of a volunteer organization, a court-appointed volunteer guardian, donated funds and spent hundreds of hours volunteering for people and organizations that I feel really passionate about helping. I never thought I would be in the position of needing help. But here I am wanting to help this beautiful dog and not having the resources to make it happen. There is a real internal struggle in such a moment and I am eternally grateful for the assistance of FOHCAS. Its amazing how it all works out when you lead with love. Rudy will come up to me and nudge me as if to say thank you after I give him food. I want to say a big Thank you! to all the people who make FOHCAS possible for people like me and animals like my loving, precious Rudy!
