This is Your Wake Up Call! The Lenten Journey – Unity Above All Else! Posted: 18 Mar 2014 04:30 AM PDT UNITY ABOVE ALL ELSE! I Corinthians 1:1-19 “Hold firmly that our faith is identical with that of the ancients. Deny this, and you dissolve the unity of the Church.” St. Thomas Aquinas In addressing the Church of God, which is at Corinth, the Apostle Paul raises a pertinent question that yet has relevance for our churches today; Is Christ divided? If not, then neither should we (His true church) be! There should be UNITY among the brethren. The words of Samuel J. Stone’s hymn ring so true: “The church has one foundation,’Tis Jesus Christ her Lord; She is His new creation, Through water by the word. From heav’n He came and sought her to be His holy bride; With His own blood He bought her, And for her life He died.” We have one Lord, one Faith, and one Baptism; one charge to keep and one God to glorify! Our prayers should be that we become more galvanized around these core principles instead of being increasingly polarized by sectarianism, institutionalism, denominationalism, classism, racism, or any “ism” or schisms that foster divisions among us. The closing stanza of Samuel J. Stone’s hymn puts it succinctly: “Back to the one foundation, from sects and creeds made free, come saints of every nation to blessed unity. Once more the ancient glory shines as in days of old, and tells the wondrous story—One God, one faith, one fold. Let there be UNITY above all else! Elder Perry D.
