This is a PSA for all cat guardians and those who hope to become one: I hope this information spares you and your kitty the pain we had to go through. Feline vaccines can cause an extremely aggressive cancer known as Vaccine Associated Fibrosarcoma (VAS). Its so bad that there are new protocols as to where vaccines are placed (lower hind legs) so you can file claims with the vaccine companies for medical care (i.e. amputation) if their vaccine causes it. This is a problem that people are not talking about! To reduce risk of VAS: * Do not over-vaccinate. Vets can be flippant, but only get what is actually legally required. * Request non-adjuvanted vaccines or intranasal (non-injecting) vaccines when available. * Massage the vaccination site after a vaccine is administered. * Keep careful records of vaccination dates, locations and brands used. * Check your pet for lumps -- these tumors grow very fast! If you notice an unusual lump, get it checked out immediately. It can be biopsed to check for VAS. If it turns out to be VAS, see a veterinary oncologist or a vet who has experienced treating VAS. They must produce clean margins for the best possible outcome. I noticed a lump on Delilah in May of 2013 and after a biopsy, she had her fibrosarcoma removed in August 2013 only to have it recur the following summer. This is unfortunately a common occurrence with this very aggressive cancer. After the painful, traumatizing process of surgery and recovery, I opted out of additional surgeries and to provide the best palliative care possible. Were near the end now and so I just wanted to share my story with all other cat guardians to hopefully prevent them from going through what we had to go through. Please feel free to re-post.
