This is a Public Service Announcement regarding the ongoing NYSEG - TopicsExpress

This is a Public Service Announcement regarding the ongoing NYSEG SCAM: Today one of my businesses, Top Shelf Liquor, was contacted by someone claiming to be NYSEG. They indicated that our bill was past due in excess of $1700, and that our power would be cut if a payment of $986 wasnt maid. Top Shelf Liquor is set up on ACH autopay directly with NYSEG, so I began verifying all of the payments that our NYSEG Invoice shows in receipet of. The gentlemen began getting iritated and started saying I understand youre frustrated and I apologize for the inconvenience, but if you dont pay that minimum amount I have to cut your power. We can always refund the money later after our investigation is complete. After allowing myself to get way too frustrated I agreed to make the payment, which he then informed me could only be made in cash. At this point I called bluff and said something to him that Im not proud of. Following this I contacted the Tompkins County Sheriffs Office, who quickly verified that this was an ongoing scam that appears to be targeting businesses. Long story short, if you get a call from NYSEG claiming you money that you know youve paid, hang up the phone immediately and call the number on your actual NYSEG invoice. The return number that the scammers are using is 1800 708 6187. The common extension is 892, and the womans name is Michelle.
