This is a big shout-out to Aasman Brand Communications, Marguerite, Al, and Trevor (who passed away recently). Last night I attended their Business After Hours art show and 25 anniversary celebration. This prompted me to reflect on our long past together. Fifteen years ago Marguerite, Al, and Trevor sat me down to say – leave newspapers and freelance! Marguerite and Al encouraged, saying “There will be work, enough work, from Aasman and others around the Yukon!” It was a huge risk for me-a leap from a regular paycheck to uncertainty, but I did it. I’ve never regretted it for a MOMENT. Not one moment. Collectively the four of us learned about pulling together photo shoots, art directing, finding models that fit the campaigns, and photo usage. All of this was a mystery to me before then. Heck, I was a newspaper photographer - I got my assignments in the morning and went out and shot them. Period. Now I was pulling people in off the street, figuring out lighting styles from a “mock-up” I was given, and learning how to market myself. It was an amazing and exciting time. And it was a time of photo campaigns for just about everyone, from Quit Smoking campaigns, to YG Tourism shoots, to NW Tel Human Resources portraits shot from a chopper! Times have changed, the field has changed dramatically, and we’re all changing with it. But what great memories of growing, receiving support, and learning with some of Yukon’s most creative marketing and branding minds. Thanks for taking me along on this great ride of yours!
