This is a bit of a re-post but worth sharing again... I think. Historically, the answer to combating hunger and food security has been philanthropic – federal food subsidies, donated food distribution through food shelves and pantries, and programs from nonprofits that are long-term dependent on donors and foundations. To help reduce hunger could we consider a diverse approach that involves the above-mentioned programs but also includes access to land planted with edible crops, and the knowledge to maintain, store, process and cook those food staples? VEL is in the process of installing a perennial edible food system at a recently developed Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity housing development. The early stages of the project have included some challenges...we hypothesize that installation and establishment f the site is going to be the easy part. Our objective is to install and establish a regenerative food system where community residents have access to safe, culturally acceptable, and nutritionally adequate diets that maximize community self reliance and social justice. As well, educate the homeowners on how to process, store and cook the perennial crops. Were looking for someone or an organization to help us develop a pre and post homeowner survey to help us quantify our results over the next three years. If youre interested in supporting this project please feel free to send us a note. We welcome questions and comments.
