This is a comment on the original post. For years we chased the clothing manufactures with cheap, uneducated labour. They left the us for cheaper labour. Now we buy jobs. Who can forget the meat packing plant, or more recently Kior who is bankrupt after receiving 69 million from Mississippi taxpayers. Remember Orick? They left the state when their economic incentives ran out, chasing more money from other poor states. Nissan promised jobs that paid above the state averages. (Mississippi paid $250,000 per job). Nissan hires large number of workers from a temp service to avoid this commitment. They only report the income of regular workers. There are numerous other examples of poor investments for taxpayers. There have been economic studies showing that Mississippi is paying too much per job to benefit our economy. As you know, we still have the highest rate of unemployment, and the lowest household income in the U.S. We love our state but, until we have a more educated population, we will never be attractive to others. We will continue to be cheap labour, or pay them to come stay for a while. Quality of life attracts jobs, and that begins with a strong educational system.
