This is a dangerous misconception. The lack of infrastructure in Africa is what has always prevented Ebola from reaching metropolitan areas and breaking out of Africa. In the US, the speed and ease of travel is what has always worried epidemiologists familiar with Ebola. Africa is changing and especially West Africa. Many people have moved to cities. Once Ebola reached the cities, it began to destroy the existing health services, the economy, and cultural practices. Within the US, a person can travel from one large city to another without getting on a plane or bus, without being noticed at all. The Western nations are woefully unprepared for Ebola. Ebola CAN spread by indirect contact with contaminated objects touched by victims. Our CDC cheif has ZERO experience with the disease and has UTTERLY UNDERESTIMATED the potential of the disease to spread in major cities in the US. The reassurances are POLITICAL, not scientific. Every reassurance and every prediction regarding this Ebola outbreak, made by WHO and CDC have been wrong and their inaction has cost many lives. The confirmed cases of Ebola being compared to other disease statistics and used to calculate mortality in this epidemic are ONLY the people who have been tested. All the dead in West Africa who did not make it to the isolation clinics are UNCOUNTED. MSF says the numbers reflect ONE QUARTER of the total dead. The reassurances are based on misinterpretation of the situation and comparisons that cant be made because Ebola is just now emerging. Western public health agencies, in a fit of arrogant ethnocentrism, have concluded that our way of life will keep Ebola from spreading. Our way of life will cause Ebola to spread MUCH FASTER than it has in West Africa. In the US people drive 70 mph. In West Africa, if they have a car, they are luck to go 3 mph over impassable, nonexistent roads. And hand washing wont help against Ebola.
