This is a good article, but it requires some added RMS commentary: For those in there 20s through 50s - Just because you feel fine now doesnt mean high cholesterol/lipid containing particles arent damaging your heart (and other) arteries. Heart and vascular diseases arent caused suddenly. LDL particles cause vascular disease through accumulation of gunk burrowing into your artery walls over time. And that time may be in your 50s or 60s if youre cholesterol is high throughout the decades of your 20s-50s. I put the word cholesterol in quotes earlier because lipid risk is better measured not by looking at looking at our total cholesterol levels but, rather, by looking at our non-HDL cholesterol levels - which is simply your total cholesterol minus your HDL. Better still is to assess our LDL particle number measured by NMR technology; ideal non-HDL is below 100 mg/dL and ideal LDL particle number is below 1000 nmol/L. Lastly, another more accurate lipid risk measure (if NMR is not available or too costly - at St Joe Oakland it is only $35 if not covered and paid out of pocket) is Apolipoprotein B. Ideal level for Apolipoprotein B is arguably below 70 mg/dL. #RMS #RealityMeetsScience TM
