This is a good article with some great exercises and I like the idea of the ‘forgotten core’. I teach that the glutes are indeed part of the core so include such exercises in all of my core strengthening training. The glutes are part of the core’s outer unit – the muscle slings that integrate the arms and legs into the torso. It’s also important to remember that they are a group of muscles, each with subtly different roles to perform. For distance running, and indeed as we teach Chi Running, the focus is far more on the stabilisation and alignment role of the glutes rather than propulsion – if you’re running 100m then indeed use the glutes to propel yourself forward but focusing on propulsion for 26.2 miles (or even 5k) will waste energy and lead to muscle over use. You do need to have a ‘awareness’ of them working however. It’s also important to highlight that planks etc and the deep core strengthening exercises shouldnt be neglected as these create a stable foundation on which to build – strengthen from the inside out otherwise the outer muscles will end up being overused trying to do the job of deep core stabilisation.
