This is a good discussion from one of our groups: ::::New Thread in Regard to Difference Between Prophet and Gift of Prophecy:::: There are five offices in the body of Christ found in Ephesians 4:11 (as well as other places) Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. These workers are to serve the body of Christ with specific functions found in the next verse (12) 12to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up... It is an Office, a position that has specific requirements, duties and task. Prophets usually are NOT self-professed, but recognized by G-d himself, usually through another recognized Prophet. There are some things that seem to follow those in the office, yes. I dont know why, but many are attacked violently through life, hated and sought after for no real reason. They are attuned to other people in a unique manner, often times being Seers who feel the move of G-d, as He said He reveals all things through Apostles and Prophets. Ephesians 3:5 which was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to Gods holy apostles and prophets.. There are different types of Prophets: Love, Judgment, Law...the list goes on and on. Usually, they know what type of Prophet they are, for the Lord reveals this in their design. Prophets are usually compelled to a certain region or position geographically. Often times they move, without much preparation or provocation. They are people who are passionate, often isolating themselves for long periods of time to be with G-d. Prophets hear the Lord quite clearly, more like dictation. Yes, words of knowledge, visions and other ways are seen, but they are the mouthpiece of G-d and have a very tuned in ear. This can be since early childhood, or it can be something that grows more and more with time. MOST of the time if you question if you are one, and look for more reasons for why you are, you are not. MOST true prophets, in my experience, are trying to find reasons why they CANT POSSIBLY be, and are most times terrified they are! lol (Any Prophets with input reading, please feel free to input) THE GIFT OF PROPHECY 1 Corinthians 14:1 Let love be your highest goal! But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives--especially the ability to prophesy. It is one of the gifts of having the Spirit of G-d within you. Anyone can exercise this gift, and it is a lovely method of communication to encourage, edify and bring the body in to accord. The GIFT usually does NOT involve correction. The GIFT of prophecy does not come with an authority of correction. 1 Corinthians 14:3-4 3 But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort. 4 Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church. PROPHETS are commissioned with authority to correct and rebuke, absolutely. But with this authority comes a HUGE accountability and thats why it shouldnt be done, unless you are a Prophet. (Constructive criticism is not the same thing as openly rebuking ect.) The issue most have is people with the Gift, IS people try to step into the OFFICE without the authority backing from the Lord. This has caused strife, confusion and a host of mess in the church. (Any Prophets have a go if I explained something not clearly please...thx.)
