This is a good reminder for the many, many non-opera people who think that the life of an opera singer is all about glamor and huge salaries. I remember once trying to explain this to a copy editor at the New York Times, who assumed that once a young singer had had a success at the Met, it was all gravy. I explained that one success did not guarantee another gig, much less steady employment, or any kind of benefits. The editor had a hard time processing this, until I finally explained that it was much like the life of a freelance journalist (which, at the time, was mine).
