This is a good riposte to a recent barrage of misguided criticism of the Common Core standards in math on Facebook. We should stop taking worksheets out of context and blame Common Core. Common Core does NOT dictate teachers what to teach. These are standards! (Read them online.) However, Common Core does put emphasis on conceptual explanations instead of mindless memorization, which is overall a very good thing. Now, some teachers may be taking this too far, and their explanations may appear to some of us counterintuitive at first glance. But teachers are also learning through this process, so cut them some slack. Lets face it: our whole system of math education is broken. Changes are required. We wont get very far by falling for what is often nothing but politically motivated feigned outrage.
