This is a gorgeous and very emotive song. We all go through the lets downs, the pain, the heartbreak of feeling lost and rejected after a breakup. No matter how much you try you still feel all the emotion like a heavy weight on your heart especially having to see them living and enjoying their life while being trapped in the memories of your old life with them. In my opinion, Alanis Morissette is one of the most amazing writers and artists in modern times. The way she expresses her thoughts is unmatched, at least to me. I heard her mention her reasons for writing this song; “Thank U” in an interview not long after it was released. She said that she had a turbulent relationship that ended painfully for her and she was mourning the loss of it. She went to India during this period and by the time she was ready to leave, she was in the process of writing this song. The meaning of this song is not complicated and it is very simple. We mostly all go through it. After suffering through the loss of a deep, very emotional love we all end up crawling through all of the suicidal thoughts and notions and self deceptions that there is no life beyond the person that broke our heart. This song is about that critical minute when you finally realize that youre going to be just fine. This part of the song is very eye opening for me: “How bout me not blaming you for everything How bout me enjoying the moment for once How bout how good it feels to finally forgive you How bout grieving it all one at a time” There is life before a relationship and there is life after a relationship. Forgiveness is the key that unlocks the door to your prison of pain, hurt, rejection and anger toward this person who hurt you. Life always goes on and it goes on to new and better things and relationships because every time we experience a loss of any kind, we grow, if we allow ourselves too. We then become teachers and encouragers to those who may need to be reminded that a broken relationship, as hard and painful as it is, is not the end of the world, but realistically, is an open door to new horizons, adventures and better relationships because we have been further prepared for them. I listened to this again today and realized more about what she was saying in the song. Thank you india … thank you terror … thank you disillusionment thank you frailty … thank you consequence … thank you thank you silence the moment I let go of it was the moment I got more than I could handle the moment I jumped off of it was the moment I touched down how bout no longer being masochistic, how ‘bout remembering your divinity how bout unabashedly bawling your eyes out, how ‘bout not equating death with stopping thank you india … thank you providence … thank you disillusionment thank you nothingness … thank you clarity … thank you thank you silence Breakups are about change. When you go through a break up it does bring about an unexpected jolt. Alanis has shared in this song how she dealt with that jolt. This song is definitely about her journey after a rough breakup. It explains how she dealt with the change (jolt) that came and brought her to an enlightened place concerning those events in her life. She illustrates in the song, getting past all the negative emotions by finally coming to a place of thankfulness for them because they were her teacher ... terror, frailty, disillusionment, elusive praise and the fear of death. She found clarity and silence through facing, embracing and meditating on forward change (Thank you India). This allows a person who is seeking to change and understand, to fully appreciate the here and now (how bout me enjoying the moment for once). This leads to finding the Divine Love we all have inside of us (How bout remembering your Divinity). Then you become overwhelmed by its beauty (How bout unabashedly bawling your eyes out) and finally seeing life (Thank You Providence) in a way you never imagined before. The BIG clue is in the Bridge of the song. The moment I let go of it (negative emotions) Was the moment I got more than I could handle (Enlightenment, and the overwhelming experience that comes with it) The moment I jumped off of it (A leap of faith) Was the moment I touched down. (Finding her True self; who she is, not who the world or a lover may want her to be). Notice in the video how she draws special attention to this passage of lyrics as she stops singing the words. She wrote this song because everyone that has experienced this (Enlightenment) wants to share it with others so that they can find their own path to Enlightenment, no matter how devastating the events are that bring it, death or a breakup … both equally as devastating but through those events you will learn and be more enlightened because of it. Breakups or any loss is never a reason to stop living or seeking. It’s one of the greatest opportunities you can have to the path of enlightenment.
