This is a great community, filled with amazing people from all walks of life. And is this town, as they do all over the world, people have differences in opinion. That is what makes it so interesting. But why is it that certain individuals in our community feel that it’s necessary to resort to bullying and sarcasm to get their point across. I am of course referring to the two gentlemen who insisted on belittling the opinions of others during a recent posted fluoride debate. You see, I am one of the “anti’s”, as they have termed us. These two individuals presume that we, the opposition, are a bunch of fluorophobic fear mongers, running around in tin foil hats, spewing out our conspiracy theories. In reality, they couldn’t be farther from the truth. While I can’t speak for everyone, I can speak for myself. I am an educated professional, who graduated from college with honors, and currently work in the medical field as a registered nurse. I can assure you that the information I have researched and collected is not “pseudo science” or even unscholarly, but rather comes from such sources as the WHO, the CDC, the ADA, and Harvard. And I am not “fudging the facts”, as they insist we are. In fact, here is a cover story that was printed in the Journal of the American Dental Association concerning a study done on fluoride supplements, dental caries and fluorosis. The conclusion? According to the article “There is weak and inconsistent evidence that the use of fluoride supplements prevents caries in primary teeth.” And “Mild to moderate dental fluorosis is a significant side effect.” Their recommendation? “ fluoride supplements during the first six years of life should be re-examined.” Scientific? I think so. Or how about this one? Harvard did a study on the Impact of fluoride on neurological development in children. They concluded : “Fluoride seems to fit in with lead, mercury, and other poisons that cause chemical brain drain,” Grandjean says. “The effect of each toxicant may seem small, but the combined damage on a population scale can be serious, especially because the brain power of the next generation is crucial to all of us.” Harvard huh? Seems pretty scholarly to me. And According the both the CDC and the ADA, they recommend parents avoid using fluoridated water to mix powdered baby formula. For those who are concerned about the low income population, and rightly so, here’s something to think about. If they can’t afford dental care and toothpaste, do you think they can afford to buy large quantities of bottled water, or in some cases even bother? And this is just the tip of the iceberg on scientific, scholarly supported research that supports opposition to fluoride. Just because some folks don’t agree, doesn’t mean we’re wrong. And if these gentlemen feel so strongly about their position in the pro-fluoridation issue, perhaps THEY should make a presentation to the city council in support of fluoridation before the council possibly “takes the cowards way out”, and sides with the fluorophobic conspiracy theorists. I’ll be there. I’ll be the one in the tin foil hat.
