This is a great link that talks about senior horses and some of the changes their bodies go through. Our Sam & Queenie (at 30+ and 29) show many of these signs, including weight loss, dental issues, swayback (Sam), muscle loss, heaves (Queenie). While old age is not an excuse for a senior horse to look horrible, it certainly does mean they require more care and special feed. We love our seniors, but they are definitely high maintenance - not only in their care but in the worry and constant evaluating you make with them to make sure their quality of life is still good. Sam & Queenie are doing great, but are continuing to show signs of their aging. Sam has had a couple of times now where getting up took him a bit more effort than usual, weve had to increase their senior feed and add beet pulp to their alfalfa pellets and they still struggle to maintain their weight, but they are happy and quality of life is still good. They enjoy their turnout and graze, demand their breakfast and dinner, love spending time in their stall, and are having a good summer.
