This is a great reminder from one of our MAP families about trick-or-treating with children who have sensory issues or are on the autism spectrum: Halloween is just around the corner and as a parent of a child on the spectrum, I have learned some things and changed the way we trick or treat. Please, do not force a child to speak to you or say trick or treat in order to get a candy. For a nonverbal child, that is the hardest and cruelest thing you could do. Also, just thrusting a bowl of candy in their faces is bad too. They see a bowl of chaos, multitude of colors and then have to find the right one. One that isnt crumpled or wasnt touching a bad color or any multitude of things. In short, open your door with a smile and a cheerful happy Halloween and you hand them some candy. Pretty simple but makes a world of difference for some kids and others wont even notice the difference! And in case you missed it, be sure to check out the MAP newsletter Adoption & The Holidays for more tips on ensuring your holiday season with your child is a happy one: conta.cc/ZEalWl
