This is a great story which I can relate to. After experiencing a stroke, several NDEs and having to be taught to walk again, I got to college and found my priorities very different from those of my peers. Being that close to death -whether in combat or a more mundane struggle for ones own life- changes priorities. The good news is that even those deep scars collected along the way can heal with time, patience, and help. The alternative is the same separation as that discussed in the Elvis link... fortunately we and many veterans organizations are there to help heal those wounds.
