This is a message to all parents: Always, ALWAYS grab the opportunity to do something special with your children, no matter how old they are and no matter how you feel. You may never get that opportunity again. When I stayed with my daughter Amelia and her John in Stockport last weekend, we went to a cafe bar with a difference, Brooklyn. The idea behind this bar is that while drinking your coffee or tea, you can select a piece of pottery and paints and decorate it in your own style. It would then be fired and glazed, and become your own personalised ornament (or plate etc). Amelia had the idea of choosing a couple of Christmas decorations which would then be personal heirlooms. I was on my way back from Croatia, where I’d been taken ill, I wasn’t feeling well, and I said no, I couldnt do it. Of course, as soon as I saw the fleeting look of disappointment on Amelia’s face I instantly regretted it. I realised how much it would have meant to her for us to do that together. I tried to turn it round by changing my mind, saying we should choose a couple of pieces to decorate. But the moment was gone. That moment has haunted me ever since and I will always be deeply sorry that I didn’t forget my own feelings for a while and spend a little time doing something special with my daughter. So, mothers and fathers, no matter how bad you are feeling, if you are physically able to do something with your sons and daughters, please don’t make the same mistake I did. Those precious moments spent doing things together are the best therapy you could ever have and I will always regret momentarily forgetting that.
