This is a multi-win-win situation. The University pedestrianise its streets; people walk for better health and environment. Coffee shacks are set up, operated by student-run social enterprises; part-time jobs for students are created, profs and students get their caffeine fixes, social causes get funding, and conversation events are produced as people go out to get their coffee, wait for their coffee, and walk back with their coffee. This joint is called House of Cards. You order your coffee and get a playing card, say, Eight of Hearts, to be called when your coffee is ready. Collect your coffee and drop it into one of the four boxes to give to the cause of your choice: health, social, environment, culture. I dropped mine in culture, but will go for environment next. Coffee was good, and the conversation with my host colleague was wonderful for the walk and the wait, and a new idea for scholarly collaboration was born. Major win!
