This is a page from a leather-bound manuscript diary I tried out a couple of years ago. My Life as an Illuminated Manuscript. An experiment in the finding of Flow and that elusive non-thing called happiness. I was chasing up information on medieval illuminated manuscripts in public libraries, to try to understand the media, and where I would fit in to the tradition, as an experimenter in a jolted cosmos where crisis is the new stability, and the known knowns ones parents knew are falling to pieces . I went to Central Library, down into the guts of the Secret City, and right beside a tome I was looking for, but did not find, I found Csikszentmihalyis study on what are basically the negative effects of television, as his research showed it. I had tried to buy that book, but it is very very expensive, and I had totally given up looking for it. These are the sorts of strange coincidences that suggest you are really on the track. You do not need to know where this track might lead to. There is a tremendous joy in discovery and surprise, in being yourself, and doing things, not sitting around merely consuming other peoples work. It is safer to consume other peoples work, because you will not make any mistakes, a couch potato is safe, but as well as gloom and disappointment, the tremendous joy of original discovery occasionally will be missing. Ya pays ya money and ya takes ya choice.
