This is a partial cover of Billy Joel’s “Summer, Highland Falls” that emphasizes the technique of the DUPLE stroke as played with my right hand on the hi-hat and then on the ride cymbal. (I posted this on my Sam Ruttenberg Facebook page entitled “The infamous DUPLE stroke as played on the hi-hat and ride cymbal. Thanks Liberty!!!”) Liberty DeVitto (Billy Joel) and me This is a tribute to Liberty DeVitto, Billy Joel’s drummer for many years, and the drummer who recorded this song on the Turnstiles LP. In fact, I got a “NICE” from Liberty on my FB page when he saw this. The Duple stroke is a huge energy saver for drummers when they’re playing constant 16th notes (as I am on the hi-hat and ride cymbal on this tune). Rather than playing constant “down” strokes (which can make you tired over a long period of time), the Duple stroke incorporates the use of the see-saw effect where the “up” stroke also hits the surface and pushes the stick back to its original position in order to start over again with the “down” stroke. You can see this done a lot with the great R&B players like Bernard Purdie.
