This is a pen an ink drawing with translucent watercolour of a Colon Checkerspot butterfly(Euphydryas colon) and Foxtail barley(Hordeum murinum). I found the butterfly specimen for this piece roadside, probably killed being windswept by a car, though still in very good shape. This is a medium size butterfly(part of the Variable Checkerspot complex), with dark wings, patterned in white and red dots. I chose to do a close-winged view, as the top coloration in this specimen was predominately black leaving the underside much more visibly pleasing. The structure of this piece was meant to catch that lovely movement of the grass in a breeze, and was accomplished by creating an arch to the Foxtail barley(repeating the arch of the top wing) and then facing the butterfly in the opposite directional flow, gripping a blade. You will see that there are many colours to the head of the grass, and this was in part due to the time of year, where spring is transitioning into summer and the long sunny days begin to dry all field grasses, leaving an artist inspired to play! Hope you have had a grand weekend full of adventure and joy ;-)
