This is a pen and ink drawing with translucent watercolour of a Common Sulphur(Colias philodice) and Sweet Pea Vetch(Fabaceae also known by the Legume Family: Leguminosae). They are both found easily along rural roadside and open fields of California in spring. The structure of this piece is playing off this short form vetchs bilateral symmetry, which left ample space to include the butterfly and still have good flow to the overall composition. There is much pleasure in drawing any plant from the sweet pea family, with the delicate tendrils reaching for purchase and the miniature pea-pods to charm any nature enthusiast. I know to many vetch is just a weed, but for me they exemplify the brief and delicate beauty of spring- ever grasping at the tall grasses to hang onto the season for as long as possible. Wishing you a beautiful day or night wherever you are in the world ;-)
