This is a penetrating story from Reverend Everett Howard, a veteran missionary to the Cape Verde Islands for 26 years. His call to the mission field has implications for all of us. ‘After finishing college and dental school, Howard was still uncertain about Gods will for his life. One night he went into the sanctuary of the church where his father was serving as pastor. He knelt down at the altar and took a piece of paper on which he wrote all the things he was ready to do for God. He signed his name at the bottom and waited for some sign of God’s affirmation and presence, but nothing happened. He took his paper again, thinking he might have left something out – still no response from the Lord. He waited and waited. Then it happened. He felt the Lord speaking within him. The Lord told him to tear up the sheet. “You’re going about it all wrong,’ He said gently. ‘Son, I want you to take a black piece of paper and sign it on the bottom, and let Me fill it in.’ Howard responded, and God guided a spectacular missionary career from that day forward.’ God is not as interested in our commitment to what we decide to do for Him as He is in what we will allow Him to do through us. Our task is not to list the accomplishments of our plans for service, but to give Him a blank sheet and let Him fill it in.
