This is a perfect example of the very unfortunate disdain given to music education in America. It reminds me of my own personal experience in High School. At the first football game of my senior year, the head coach sent the football team back to the field to warm up during the other bands performance. They did not even attempt to stay within the end zones. Instead, they used everything behind the far hash marks, not even caring if the bands drill called for use of that space. Many of us were very upset about the rudeness that had been shown to the opposing band and took a moment during our third-quarter break to offer our apologies for the head coachs intolerable behavior. The next day I wrote an email to the coach (as respectfully as I could muster), explaining that we felt his actions were very rude and reflected badly upon our school. Upon reading my email, he promptly pulled me aside and chewed me out (in an extremely unprofessional manner) in front of my band director, who was not aware of the email and was surely confused as to what was happening. During this rant, he called me The most disrespectful student Ive ever had. He was referring to an incident in which I reminded him to sign a document for me that he had forgotten. Because he never signed it, I almost failed a class. In Alabama, a person must be a teacher to be a coach. He was a prime example of why this is a bad idea. He always walked into class late, threw some worksheets on our desks, and walked out to chat with his coach buddies. No action was ever taken against him for any of this, because football is king in Alabama. At least he didnt shake a podium with a drum major on top. That student could have fallen and broken his neck. He should sue the school system!
