This is a photo of my paternal great grandmother, Hattie Rose - TopicsExpress

This is a photo of my paternal great grandmother, Hattie Rose Marshall Dalton. Some have asked me if she was a nanny to the two pictured children, but in reality they are her own grandchildren. The misrepresentation of this image is how the forces of race and identity in America impacts families of color. My great grandparents came from a line (Dalton, Marshall, Barnett & Male) of blended black, white and Indian families who over the years have been called West Virginia Guineas, Chestnut Ridge People, Melungeons and even Black Appalachians. They were members of early American multi-racial families that would largely settle on either side of the Ohio River in West Virginia and Eastern Ohio. Today, there are many descendants of these early families that may see themselves as white, black, Indian, or even multi-racial, but what they all share is being part of a melting pot called America.
