This is a photo of the old Girl Scout Point on Iowa lake, south of Fairmont. Local Historians: In the summer of 1858, the settler population of Martin County was scared to death. Most of them lived near what is now the Timberlake Orchard, on Iowa lake. They got word that white settlers were attacked by Dakota braves near Spirit Lake. Alarmed and afraid that they might be in danger, the settlers gathered at the home of George Britt, where they signed the Fort Britt compact. This compact was an agreement to build an octagonal wooden palisade about 60ft in diameter on the property of Mr Britt, for the purpose of protecting the settlement. They built the structure quickly and stayed in the fort (everyone) there for months. Some of the men never left to harvest their crops, despite the fact that they were never attacked ( or in retrospect, in danger). Starving, half of the settlers left at the end of that fall. I need your help. Does anyone know where this fort was? We know it was near Iowa lake, and my dad said he remembers an historical marker of some sort from when he was a kid. Does anyone know more about the location of the fort?
