This is a piece of news which is entirely unexpected and about which we are cautiously optimistic. Unfortunately it appears that they plan to skip 2061: Odyssey Three and move directly to The Final Odyssey, and the last two books werent up to the standard of 2001 and 2010, two of the most important books from the veritable catalogue of classics created by Sir Arthur C Clarke. While the books were set in a largely linear universe, there is some drift between them in order to service the needs of the plot, though where they do diverge is in the last chapters of 2001 and 2061 he drops a hint of a possible path for the next book which he entirely ignored when it came time to write them. Signed on as a producer rather than director, it is important to remember that Ridley Scott has been connected with two genuine masterpieces of science fiction cinema, Alien and Blade Runner, and despite the numerous failings of Prometheus it was technically excellent; more of concern is the involvement of Stuart Beattie whose resume worryingly includes Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and I, Frankenstein.
