This is a post I made in response to a discussion about the biblical role of men and women. I will email you a copy of my dissertation if you are interested. Just inbox me your email addresses. My dissertation project started with a problem in our local church. Like many predominantly African-American congregations we did not have elders. In researching this problem I thought it was necessary to consider the problem from a broader perspective. I wanted to get a sense of the attitudes and beliefs of our congregation about the biblical roles of men and women in the family, the church, and the society because I believe there is correlation and influence flowing throughout the fabric of each entity. I found that the men and women in our congregation were more concerned about the absence of male leadership particularly in the family and church than they were about perceived limitations of the role of women in the church. There were also a number of factors impacting the stability of many families of African-American heritage such as the lingering impacts of slavery and segregation, high levels of divorce, unwed parents, and spiritually mixed or unbalanced families. In my research I reviewed the current literature (2009) about the shifted philosophical belief systems such as postmodernism, the impact of World War II, advances in technology, politics, the media, and society. I also did research on the Feminist movement and how it is shaping and has shaped our current understanding and attitudes concerning the role of women. In a study such as this it was also important for me to consider Creation, the will of God, hermeneutics, and the authority of Scripture. I do believe Scripture allows a broader role for women in church/ministry than perhaps we have allowed; however, based on my research and study of Scripture do not believe that includes women serving in the capacity as ministers, elders, or deacons. Many of the Scriptures referenced above do speak to a cultural situation; however, Pauls arguments are based on Creation and not culture. There is growing and mounting pressure for the people of God to follow the societal attitude and views of men and women. Of course there is much more to be said and I welcome the discussion. By His Grace!
