To those of you who have entered, thank you for being part of the 100 Capital Classic 2014 Whichever category you have entered, please read carefully and, hopefully, most of your questions will be answered. There will be a compulsory race briefing in the registration marquee at 18H00. ALL COMPETITORS AND THEIR SECONDS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND THE BRIEFING. The venue will be open from We are providing TWO shoe chips so please remove any foreign (champion chip, etc). We are also hoping to provide a bib tag as well; you will need to give the shoe tags back at the end of the event, please. Please wear your age category tags front and back of your vest. There are many splits and, this being the first (we believe) 24 hour championship on South African Soil, many age group time to be set. Along the way you pass 6 hours, 50 miles, 100km, 12 hours, 100 miles, etc. Each event will started by a round fired from the Naval Saluting gun (VERY LOUD CANNON) as will the final cut off. Please warn your seconds. The track is in Princess Margaret Drive, next door to Harry Gwala Stadium and opposite Maritzburg College, The GPS co-ordinates are 29°3658.90 S 30°2259.26 E From Durban: Take the Alan Paton Road Exit into Pietermaritzburg from the N3. Pass through four intersection traffic lights (not counting the pedestrian crossing at UKZN) and Turn LEFT towards Richmond/Eastern Cape at the 6th. There is a Sasol Service Station on your right and this is Alexandra Road. (if you get to the river you’ve gone 100 metres too far) This is roughly 3 kilometres after you take the left fork off the N3. Go about one kilometre to the next traffic light which is marked by Alexandra Police Station (historic large red brick building) on your left and Harry Gwala Stadium on the right. Turn Right into Princess Margaret Drive and go straight (Harry Gwala on your right) for about 500 metres and entre the concrete palisade fenced athletics track. From Johannesburg: After passing under the Hilton bridge at the top of Town Hill, go (slowly 100kmh limit) down the hill past the arrester bed and take the next off ramp left to Peter Brown (formerly Sir Duncan McKenzie) Drive. Turn right across the freeway and pass straight through the traffic circle. 3km down the hill past the Show Grounds (allow time for the crowds at the Garden Show) and over the hump back bridge. Pass straight through town past the City Hall and cross the river. Another 100 metres (about 2,5km since you passed the Show Grounds) Turn RIGHT towards Richmond/Eastern Cape at the 6th. There is a Sasol Service Station on your left and this is Alexandra Road. (if you get to the Shell Service Staion you’ve gone 100 metres too far) This is roughly 6 kilometres after you take the left fork off the N3. Go about one kilometre to the next traffic light which is marked by Alexandra Police Station (historic large red brick building) on your left and Harry Gwala Stadium on the right. Turn Right into Princess Margaret Drive and go straight (Harry Gwala on your right) for about 500 metres and entre the concrete palisade fenced athletics track. There is parking within the grounds. Please be aware that the ground is cleared of vegetation in anticipation of the pavilion construction (only grass is infield and you’re not camping there J) The 100 mile and 24 hour entrants will be running in lanes 1 to 3 and the route will be measured as a 400 metre lap. The rest of the events will be run in lanes 5 to 8 and the lap distance will be taken at the running line of lane 5 (approximately 430 metres – but that is not exact. The IAAF Survey will finalise the lap distance and you will be briefed finally at the race briefing ay 18H00) Medical support will be provided by a paramedic from Event Medical Services and the Chiropractors from the DUT clinic. There will be space allocated inside the track, on the grass, where ONLY THE 24 HOUR/100 MILE participants may pitch a gazebo and place their table, deck chairs, etc. NO Vehicles inside OR ANYWHERE NEAR the track. Pedestrian traffic across the track will be limited to one crossing point and must be kept to a bare minimum. ONLY OFFICIALS AND THOSE SECONDING THE 24 HOUR WILL BE PERMITTED INFIELD AND THAT LIMITED TO ONLY THE PERIMETER. Lighting during the Friday night will be provided by two generator driven flood lights. We are grateful to the following folk for making this possible the consultant and contractors for making this possible. I suggest that you come prepared with a headlamp, just in case. Hopefully it will be a wasted item. The lighting for the last hour of the event will be lit by smaller flood lighting. There will be an urn with hot water supply. For those needing seconding, there will be a table with water, coke, biscuits, bananas, oranges, chockies, energellies, periodic boiled potatoes and, at strategic times, Granny Pam’s lemon juice. If you’re intending to come down and overnight before or after the event, I suggest you book soon as it is the Garden Show the same weekend.
