This is a really fascinating and important piece of research. I have always found it very strange how different people and different systems of magico-spiritual work perceive the others and their voices. It has seemed to me that a large number of the practitioners I have known have a common perception of threat in their dealings with spirits. This is not my experience at all! It has also been my perception from reading about magic in other cultures that this is not really a universal thing. Which is cool as it balanced out a lot of what I heard and read from Western sources. This is not to say that there are not malefic entities about- Ive done my fair share of pretty harrowing exorcisms, but this is a tiny, tiny fragment of my experience, and in general I was brought into those situations to provide help. Meaning that it was a situation I would not normally have been a part of. This article addresses this, although in the context of schizophrenia. Well worth the read.
