This is a really good read and interesting argument against streaming services. As someone who always survived in the model of giving your music away for free and making money by touring, this doesnt really have a huge affect on us. We needed to come up with an alternate business model early on to compete in this business, as we didnt write radio hits. Luckily, we developed a new business model based on touring very early on, adapted to the internet as early as we could, and have been doing interviews about how we had stumbled upon this new model ever since. We had learned from our predecessors like the Dead and Phish that giving music away was the best way to develop the touring model, and I had given up on making lots of money off of recorded music almost two decades ago. That all having been said, it seems the music distributors and the labels have yet again found away to make massive profits off of musicians without spreading the wealth. If the profits are as massive as they say, this is completely unfair and I agree that many, many wonderful artists will fade into obscurity. They should be sharing this money with the artists that make the music that make their service possible. I am sure that we wont be pulling all of our music off of Spotify, but I understand why people of the old model want to. I take this moment to thank all of you for allowing us to survive in this world by touring. We are eternally grateful for the opportunity you have given us by coming to see us play!
