This is a really, really zoomed-out picture of you. Think about that for a second... Perhaps one of the biggest flaws of the human condition, is that our self-consciousness, combined with our fixed viewpoint in space, erroneously gives us the idea that we are independent entities. Individuals who occupy a planet. Or a country. Or an ideology. The truth is far simpler, and perhaps even more profound: We are actually the planet itself, in human form. Just as an apple is part of a tree. On the surface, I fully acknowledge that this sounds like new-age bullshit. (Its a fine line). But consider that every molecule in your body has an origin. The primordial elements (water, carbon, etc.) that comprise you, didnt miraculously spring into being when you were conceived. They are the same elements that were present, when the planet first formed from the early-suns accretion disk, 4.5 billion years ago. And beyond that, they are the same elements that have existed since the conception of the known universe, itself. The mass of the Earth doesnt increase when a new human is added into the eco-system. Nor does it decrease, when someone passes away. The building blocks of what was once a person, are simply redistributed. This has staggering implications on a personal level: It means that every part of you has existed since the beginning of the universe, and the beginning of time. It means that when you emerged, and were born - that wasnt the beginning of your story. It is literally just a milestone. Everything that you are, existed before you were born. It means that when you die - what really happens is that the part of the universe that took the shape of you for a little while, is recycled back into the cosmos. It means that when you look around you - at other people, at animals, at plants - at the Earth as a whole - youre actually looking at the bigger you. The collective you. We are the proverbial apples... and the planet itself, is the tree. And just as with an apple - when you zoom out, you just see the tree. Zoom out again, and you just see the forest. Do this a few more times... and youll see the picture Ive attached to this post. THAT is a picture of you. Its not the planet, or the environment. Its a self-portrait. You are not merely human. You existed at the dawn of time. Your story has been in the making, for billions of years. And right now is the part where you get to be conscious in that story. It may be the only portion of your story, where you get to realize your own existence. Or it may not.
