This is a really smart article. On a related note, as I was reading it and reflecting on the generally messed up and criminal backgrounds of the two French suspects, it occurred to me that if this was two white Christian fundamentalists opening up on, say, a gay magazine, the debate would have been very different, and that violent, anti-social extremists exist in many guises. Its possible to argue that the narratives around what they do are sometimes almost incidental compared to the pathways of social alienation which made extremism an attractive option in the first place. Well probably never be able to make it so something like this never happens - but in todays wonderful, terrible, globalised world we absolutely have to keep trying.
