This is a reminder about tomorrows talk in the Autumn 2014 semester programme of the CENTRE for SOUTH ASIAN STUDIES at Edinburgh University. Our speaker will be Rowan Ellis, University of Edinburgh who will be speaking on the topic : Greening the World Class City: urban environmental initiatives and citizenship in South Asia Drawing on case studies from Chennai, I examine some of the particularities of recent initiatives for urban sustainability in Indian cities. In doing so, the paper highlights the ways in which recent urban environmental initiatives incorporate two ostensibly incompatible ideological positions: that of environmental sustainability and globally-orientated, market-led growth. By focusing on the ways in which urban environmental projects hinge on very specific (and exclusive) understandings of urban quality of life, I suggest that these initiatives also reflect and reproduce contested social relations in Indian cities. Urban environmental interventions and the transformation of urban space they envisage are crucial moments when various urban users can makes claims on urban space. In this sense, we argue that urban environmental projects are also part of the social and cultural politics of becoming world class. Venue: Sidney Smith Lecture Theatre, Medical School, Teviot Place, Doorway 1, Room 2.520 Date: Thursday 8 November 2014 Time: 4pm - 5.30pm ALL ARE WELCOME.
