This is a response to some videos I see made my shayukh. While I love and respect all Shayukh, these videos they make expose the masses and general Muslims to polemical/sectarian issues, often uploaded in improper place (youtube). While they have good intentions, I would like us to understand, sometimes these efforts create rifts in the community -- and encourage the use of labeling other Muslims. Students then debate these issues unmannerly. And unfortunately, sometimes these videos confuse the youth and even deter them from Islam, because all they see is a fractured community or too many people saying MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY, when the reality is these youth are struggling with Salah and Islam itself. If anyone thinks I am criticizing the Shayukh, that is far from the truth. They are our teachers, mentors, and provide guidance for the community and make things easy for us. So JazakAllahu Khairun Ya Shayukh. Allah bless you all and use you all as a means to call the people back to Allah. Let me begin my sharing the following 2 essential videos by Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan. Please watch them if you have time. Actually, they are ESSENTIAL I would say, and we should know about this before engaging in certain issues... The future of our Community: youtube/watch?v=LumwYGp729w A Generation of Doubt, Polemics, and in-fighting? youtube/watch?v=MS6oS5qi698 Moving on to another positive point: both Sh. Zahir Mahmood and Sh. Haitham recently came together to speak out against the unlawful detainment of an amazing human rights activists, our brother Moazzam Begg. In fact, many Muslims came together from this from all sort of background, even though they may disagree on a few minutiae issues. This is whats important to me. And that, whether people follow the a madhab loosely (i.e. dawah as-salaifiyyah) or stringently (jamah at-tabligh/deobandi), is not so important. As long as they are connected to scholars, scholarship, and understand that the madhab is a means/tool, thats whats important, WAllahu Alim. People have different personalities and understand things differently. Just think about this deeply for a second. PEOPLE, being of different languages, personalities, intellectual understanding, background, needing brotherhood, will naturally be attracted to certain types of dawah efforts. Please to do not critically analyze my words, understand what Im trying to say here. Of course, we all should be against any type of extremism (becoming fanatical about MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY), as both Mufti Taqi Usmani and Sh. Uthaymeen have stated. The other thing we need to chat about, is what about people who compromise on principles or abandon speaking the truth on pertinent issues? For example, with regards to whats happening today, domestically and internationally? Those scholars, regardless of their background or school, who perpetuate sectarian issues, why doesnt their tradition not support/encourage them to deal/address with the social, political, and spiritual issues of today? Thats why I believe some duat have become successful in bringing back masses of people to Allah - because the deal with the realities and priorities, as opposed to exacerbating minutiae and polemical issues. Regardless of their Islamic educational background, they focus on calling people back to Allah aza wa jal, instead of delving into controversy. A lot of people make the point that Imam Nawawee and Ibn Katheer and many Imams followed a Madhab. But heres another interesting question: what was their APPROACH to the madhab? Regardless of what it was, it certainly was not fanatical. And did they do what we do today, which is exacerbate and fuel many of the polemical issues of today, which end up only deterring the youth from Islam? And Allah knows best. Listen to our Sheikh, Ali Hassan, who studied a madhab and even defends brothers whom he disagree with in this series. We need MORE of this and less of what is being posted these days, and exposing the awaam to these issues, in my humble opinion, and I ask Allah to preserve all of you and increase us in knowledge. youtube/watch?v=PHkFkknENhk Also, agee or disagree with Sh. Saleh Al-Fawzan, heres what he had to say about the Madhabs: youtube/watch?v=I7IuUr_-YcE So whats it going to be? Are we going to talk about polemical issues for the remainder of dawah? Or are we going to call people back to Islam, spread this deen, strive to ensure that it is established, and support and encourage Muslims to use their strengths and interest to initiate projects which benefit the community? The choice is yours. Please forgive me if I said anything incorrect. And I ask Allah subhana wa tala to grant us ikhlaas and strengthen us all in these times. And finally, I remind you and myself, let us read Surah Ahl-Imran, Ayah 103.
