Rosenthal has reported that Cano is not asking for $300 million, but is starting free agency with a clean plate, and no opening bid. The highly discussed $300 million was a number put on the table by Cano and his agent (Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Sports) before the All-Star break, as an offer for the Yankees to secure his rights for the next decade. In other words, Cano has been planning all along to test the free agent waters, and simply gave the Yankees the chance to spend some extra money to guarantee that he’d remain in pinstripes. It’s basically an exorbitant version of what the San Francisco Giants just did with Tim Lincecum, when they gave him a 2-year, $35 million contract: pay him more than he’s worth to avoid the risk of losing him in free agency.
