This is a series of poems about America, our unlimited ability to reach our potential to magnify our greatness. America responds and America will stand were written for 9/11 and appear in the book Look for the Blessings. America responds America responds In unity; Differences are set aside As the community Rallies to comfort the afflicted In their lamentation. America responds With compassion And forces that divide Us are deactivated, And restricted, As we unite our nation. America responds, With patriotic Expressions of pride In this great land, And everything For which it stands. America responds By rolling up her sleeves And getting back to business; To ensure that evil Doesnt get the upper hand. America opens her heart And her store houses, While she grieves, For she understands That mourning should Not be brief: That generosity Should not be paralyzed By her grief. America responds Within her character. Her personality Condemns terrorism And shows contempt For brutality. When victimized, No criminal is exempt From her mighty hand; For her call to justice Is swift to reprimand. She will endure, For calamity will unite us and Stoke the flames of patriotism. America will mourn and bury her children But not in silence. Although distraught, And intermittently sobbing, She screams At the images of sorrow. America has taught Us to be strong, When evil is intent on robbing Us of freedom; To be triumphant over wrong So tomorrow, Righteousness will still prevail; And justice will be consistent; For justice will not fail. America will stand For freedom and justice And will not compromise The values upon which This country was founded. America, will defy evil and rise In spirit for she is grounded In principles universal and just. She is near to her God And in her God the trust Grows stronger. America will stand, Although the landscape changed, She is majestic in her grief; Although she is estranged From some of her people, The separation will be brief. America will stand, Weeping, angered by the violation, As she cares for her people On the eve of retaliation. For which it stands, A worthy and noble cause, Fortified by regenerating laws, Evolving to create and reiterate Our promise, To ultimately heal our land. For which it stands, Under God, A fabric of multi-colored strands Interwoven to understand The one song with many voices, To illustrate the many choices, Laced together in choral excellence By popular demand, With the people reaching across bands Of separation to brand the purpose For which we began. For which it stands, Beneath the pinnacle of divine favor, The cynical and supportive live In interlocking independence, As clauses and conjunctions To complete each sentence In our paragraph Of possibility. They may accept substandard living on the run, To walk freely beneath an American sun. Life’s transient, but when freedom is within reach, They gamble, the risk is worth the freedom of speech. They suffer to survive nefarious regimes, Inspired by America, the dream. They’re freedom seekers with family on their minds. Immigrants working for the ones they left behind. Freedom’s a timeless value, held in high esteem, Inspired by America, the dream. They want to contribute to the economy; A fair exchange for a chance at autonomy. Are they asking too much? What should the answer be? As those who came before them, they want to be free. On the minds of millions as they lay down to sleep, Is a land of opportunity that is steep In traditions where competition builds a team, Inspired by America, the dream.
